Crusaders hold off Bobcats, 64-52

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The North Greenville University women's basketball team held Lees-McRae College to a field goal percentage of 30 percent, and Krisceda Cotton recorded a double-double with game-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds en route to a 64-52 win in Conference Carolinas play on Tuesday night in Williams Gymnasium.

North Greenville (19-7, 14-4 CC) posted a field goal percentage of 41.1 percent on the night, including a 41.7 percent clip in the second half, while holding Lees-McRae (8-15, 4-13 CC) to a mark of 30 percent from the floor. The Crusaders won the battle on the glass by a 48-36 margin, including a 32-19 advantage on the defensive boards.

Icey Patterson (Seneca, S.C.) led the way for the Bobcats with 14 points, six rebounds, and a game-high five steals, as DeAnna Waters (Upper Marlboro, Md.) nearly recorded a double-double with 12 markers and a team-best nine boards. Paige Whitaker (Harrisburg, N.C.) added 10 points, while senior Chloe Parker (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in seven rebounds and six points.

Cotton led all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including a 7-for-8 evening at the charity stripe, while recording a double-double with 12 rebounds. Christina Carlis and Karly Stache added 14 and 13 points, respectively, as Alisha Hope chipped in 10 markers. Courtney Friddle nearly posted a double-double with eight points and seven rebounds.

North Greenville led wire-to-wire, opening a 28-10 lead with 4:21 to play in the first half when Friddle banked in a layup to cap a 14-0 run. The Crusaders continued to push the tempo over the final four minutes of the period, stretching the margin to 35-14 heading into the intermission following a last-second jumper by Hope.

Hope and the Crusaders carried the momentum into the second half, pushing the lead to 41-17 on a jumper by Hope before the Bobcats responded with a 14-2 run, cutting the margin to 43-31 on a steal and a bucket by Patterson with 10:34 to play.

The final 10 minutes proved to be a back-and-forth struggle, with the Bobcats cutting a 21-point Crusader lead to 13 on a pair of free throws by Zukye Smith (Chesterfield, Va.) at the 4:22 mark. North Greenville would push the margin to 59-42 on a Cotton lay-in before the Bobcats closed out the contest with a 10-5 spurt.

Lees-McRae returns to the court on Friday when the Bobcats travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to close out the regular season against Converse College at 5:30 p.m.
