SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Freshman Markia Stacey scored a season-high 23 points and sophomore Caitlin Brown grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds while the Lees-McRae women's basketball team outlasted Converse, 66-64, in a Conference Carolinas tilt Friday night in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Bobcats (3-10, 2-4 CC) saw Brown (Kingstown, N.C.) produce her fourth double-digit rebounding effort in the win. The Valkyries (2-7, 1-5) enjoyed a 20-point performance from Brianna Jones while Yashee Johnson swatted four shots.
Both teams forced 24 turnovers.
Converse scurried out to an 11-2 advantage following three pointers from Kassidy Moorhouse and Jones in the first 3:21.
Stacey (Morganton, N.C.) and Brea Forbes (Freeport, Bahamas) combined for 14 of LMC's next 16 points while the Bobcats shaved the deficit to two at the end of the quarter, 20-18.
The Valkyries clung to a three-point lead, 27-24, despite a jumper from Breana Hardnett (Greensboro, N.C.).
Both squads go rolling from behind the arc while the next five made field goals between both teams were from deep range.
Senior Tayler Collins (Fayetteville, N.C.) put LMC up for the first time with one minute remaining in the half following a layup.
Stacey and Collins were responsible for the next four made field goals for LMC while the lead grew to six, 45-39.
Sophomore Mackenzie Blankenship (Johnson City, Tenn.) ripped off five consecutive points in a 26-second span to push the lead to eight, 53-45.
Blankenship finished the night with 10 points.
Converse's defense stymied the Bobcats while holding them to one bucket in the first 7:32 of the final quarter.
Blankenship was clutch with a deep three to tie it at 58. Freshman Alexis Ammons (Asheville, N.C.) and Stacey recorded layups while LMC retook a small lead, 62-60.
The Bobcats hit four free throws in the final 12 seconds to wrap up the win.
Forbes and Collins finished with nine and eight points, respectively.
LMC travels to Southern Wesleyan Saturday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m. for a CC battle in Central, S.C.
