DUE WEST, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team connected on 12 three-pointers to overcome an early deficit and defeat Erskine College on the road, 73-62. The victory, which clinches a season sweep of the Flying Fleet for the Bobcats, boosts LMC's record to 7-14 overall and 4-11 in conference play.
The Bobcats started extremely slowly Saturday. Erskine quickly jumped out to an 11-0 lead on Lees-McRae before five minutes came off the clock in the opening quarter. LMC, however, corrected themselves somewhat and got within nine points after one period. The Bobcats really turned up the pressure in the second quarter. As a team, LMC connected on six three-pointers in the stanza and outscored Erskine 27-11 overall to gain the lead going into the locker room, 38-31.
Erskine looked like it may get back into the game as it trailed by as little as three points in the later stages of the third quarter. However, the Bobcats kept the Flying Fleet from getting any closer than that thanks to their shooting from long distance. LMC grew its lead back to double figures and ended up winning Saturday's contest by 11 points, 73-62.
Despite not starting the game, Mackenzie Blankenship ended the day as Lees-McRae's leading scorer with 16 points. Fellow guard Markia Stacey connected on a trio of shots from beyond the arc to account for the bulk of her 13 points on the day. Rounding out the double figure scorers was freshman Meg Crawford who finished with 11. Crawford definitely led the charge for the Bobcats from the free throw line finishing 7-of-8 from the charity stripe Saturday.
Lees-McRae will look to pick up not only its second win a row Tuesday when it visits Southern Wesleyan but also notch a season sweep of the Warriors as well. The Bobcats knocked off SWU, 94-72, when the latter visited Banner Elk earlier this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
