BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team fell to Converse College 68-60 on Saturday (Feb. 2) in Conference Carolinas action.
Game Summary - The teams played to a 7-7 deadlock over the first three minutes and change, before a Converse run put the Valkyries ahead 15-8 at the four-minute mark. The two teams would go quiet for about two minutes, before Lees-McRae would go on a run of its own to end the quarter and leave the teams tied at 17 after 10 minutes. Lees-McRae used an 8-2 run over the final two and a half minutes to stage their comeback.
Lees-McRae would take a four-point lead to the half, after holding several different leads in the frame. The Bobcats jumped out to a five-point lead over the first four minutes, before the lead was extended to seven. Converse would get back within three with three and a half minutes to play in the quarter, before coming back to tie the game at 31 with a minute to play. Lees-McRae ended the half with a 5-2 run to take a 36-32 lead to the half.
Converse would out-score Lees-McRae 17-11 in the third to take a two-point lead to the fourth quarter. Lees-McRae would extend its lead to seven early on in the frame; before the Valkyries would put together a run to take a 43-42 lead with five and a half minutes to play in the quarter. Converse would grow their lead up to seven with four minutes to play in the quarter, before the Bobcats would score the final four points of the frame to head to the fourth quarter trailing by one possession.
The Valkyries would win the final frame 19-13 to earn their ninth overall and third league win of the season. The two teams were deadlocked at 50 just over a minute into the quarter, before a flurry of scoring possessions would leave Converse up by five with five minutes to play. The visitors would extend their lead to as many as nine into the final two and a half minutes, before two free throws from Brea Forbes and a three-pointer from Tiana Shuff got the Bobcats back within just four with 1:39 to play. The two teams would scatter free throws in the final minute and a half for the Valkyries to get the road win.
Stats Rundown - Lees-McRae shot 31.9 percent (22-69) from the floor, 20.7 percent (6-29) from beyond the arc and just 58.8 percent (10-17) from the foul line in the loss. Markia Stacey led the way with a game-high 18 points, while Forbes scored 16 points for her 10th straight double-digit scoring effort. The Bobcats pulled down 34 rebounds in the contest, with 14 on the offensive end and 20 on the defensive end. Forbes paced the effort on the glass with seven rebounds on the day.
