Bobcats down Queens, 68-57, for first win of the season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season Wednesday night as it downed Queens University of Charlotte by a score of 68-57. With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 1-2 on the season.

After a slow first quarter where the teams combined to score 19 points, the Bobcats came back for the second quarter with their offense clicking. Lees-McRae went on to outscore the Royals 20-8 in the second frame en route to taking a 29-18 lead into the halftime break. Destiny Johnson paced the team with eight points in the second quarter outburst and four other Bobcats scored points in the quarter.

Despite trailing by double figures, Queens did not go away quietly in the final two quarters. The Royals outscored the Bobcats 18-9 in the third and flirted with taking the lead on a few different occasions. Finally, Queens would pull in front in the fourth quarter, 44-42 with 7:52 to go. Credit to the Bobcats as they continued to press on. As a team, Lees-McRae scored 30 of its 68 points in the fourth quarter alone to pull back in front of the Royals and seal its first win of the 2019-20 season.

Lees-McRae was led on Wednesday by the duo of Johnson and Davinique Campbell. Johnson scored 19 points to go along with six rebounds, while Campbell netted 18 points of her own to go along with eight rebounds. Ava Bethea also had a good night on the glass grabbing seven rebounds to go with her nine points. Overall, a key in LMC's victory was its ability to get to the free throw line and convert. As a team, the Bobcats went 14-for-17 (82.8 %) compared to a 13-for-21 effort (61.9 %) from Queens.

The Bobcats will return to action on Thursday when they host Mars Hill in their home opener. Thursday night's game is set to tip-off at 6 p.m. from Williams Gymnasium.
