Cox Sets NCAA Record With 13 Goal, 16 Point Performance

CHARLOTTE, NC - Desiree Cox set an NCAA record for goals and points in a game Sunday afternoon, leading the Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats to a 24-18 non-conference win the over Methodist University Monarchs. Cox buried an NCAA record 13 goals in the win, and also chipped in with 3 assists for a record 16 point game.

The Monarchs opened the scoring with Andrea DiStefano scoring an unassisted tally at 25:50 of the first half. Cox evened the score with her first of the day just 34 seconds later. DiStefano and Krystal Poirier scored back to back goals for the Monarchs to give them the early 3-1 lead, with Cox and DiStefano trading goals once again afterwards to make the score 4-2 in favor of Methodist. Cox would ignite a 7-2 run for the Lady Bobcats at 15:55 to complete the hat trick, scoring three more during the run to give her six in the half and the Lady Bobcats a 9-6 lead heading into halftime.

Ellie Psillas and Cox would open the second half scoring for the Lady Bobcats, extending their lead to 11-6, only to see the Monarchs score a pair of their own by DiStefano and Chrystal Bradley to cut the lead back down to three. Goals by Cox and the Monarchs Diane Doroftei made the count 12-9 in favor of Lees-McRae, however Bradley would bury a natural hat trick to knot the score at twelve. Clair Shaw and DiStefano would trade goals to bring each team up to 13 before Cox put the Lady Bobcats up for good at 14-13 with 14:42 remaining. Cox and Shaw would give the Lady Bobcats a three goal cushion at 16-13 but the Monarchs would continue to chip away as Kelsie Britt found the back of the net at 11:02 to cut the lead to two, 16-14. Julia Campbell would score the first of her career high four goal performance on a free position shot at 10:33 to kick start the Lady Bobcats strong finish as they doubled up the Monarchs 8-4 over the final ten minutes to earn their first win of the 2008 season.

Cox' 16 points in one game ties the NCAA record for points in a game across all Divisions and establishes the NCAA Division II record, eclipsing the previous record of 14 set by Gannon's Stacey Reynolds, 2 goals, 12 assists), in 2000. Cox' 13 goal performance also establishes a new NCAA Division II record for goals in a game, eclipsing the previous record of 12 set by Franklin Pierce's Jami Ladakakos in 1999. The 13 goal, 16 point performance also establishes a new Lees-McRae program record for goals and points in a game.

In eleven games this season Cox (Hendersonville, TN) has scored 54 goals and added 4 assists. Her 54 goals lead the nation in both total goals and goals per game (4.91) while she also lead Conference Carolinas in ground balls per game averaging 3.72, (41 total). Cox' 5.27 points per game average also ranks eighth nationally and second in Conference Carolinas while her 58 total points are tied for fourth best nationally and third in the conference.

Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Bobcats were Campbell with a career high four goals, Clair Shaw with four, Ellie Psillas with a pair and defender Cloe Klaus with a single. Klaus, known more for her ground ball prowess, extends her goal scoring streak to three consecutive games.

Andrea DiStefano led the Monarchs with seven while Chrystal Bradley added six. Kelsie Britt chipped in a pair while Diane Doroftei, Christina Layson, and Krystal Poirier rounded out the Methodist scoring.

The Lady Bobcats will resume action Wednesday evening at 6:00pm when Conference Carolinas foe Limestone College pays a visit to Tate Field. Limestone enters the 6:00pm contest ranked number two in the nation.
