Chase Prepares Lady Bobcats for 2009 Season

BANNER ELK, N.C. - Head coach Amanda Chase prepares her Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats lacrosse team for the 2009 season in her first season as a head coach.

The 2009 Lady Bobcats are led by their three captains: senior Julia Campbell (Black Mountain, N.C.), senior Susan Dael (Bel Air, Md.) and junior Abby White (Madisonville, Tenn.).

White finished third on the team in goals with 12, in assists with two and in points with 14. Campbell added nine goals and two assists in 2008, while Dael was the cornerstone of the Lady Bobcat defense.

Dael and sophomore Lauren Martin (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) will anchor Chase's defense this season. They will be joined by freshmen Kelly Mendsen (Apalachin, N.Y.) and Anna Deluke (Woodstock, Ga.) on the back line.

"Susan and Lauren are two of our most experienced players," Chase said. "Being such a young team, we will be looking for these two to be the vocal leaders on defense."

The midfield will be controlled by Campbell and returners White and Desiree Cox (Hendersonville, Tenn.). Freshmen Tiffany Paris (Pennsauken, N.J.) and Lauren Ocho (Boone, N.C.) will be thrown into the mix at the midfield as well.

Desiree Cox last changed not only Lees-McRae women's lacrosse record books but national record books during her freshman season in 2009. She was named First Team All-Conference, Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year and to the www.womenslacrosse.com All-America Rookie Team. Her 75 goals and goals per game average, five goals per game in 15 games played, led the nation in 2008. She was named NIKE/Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week during the season when she broke the NCAA record for points in a game with 16 points, 13 goals and three assists.

"Our speed in the midfield is going to be one of our biggest assets this season," Chase said. "With such a small roster, these girls know how important their conditioning will be to the success of our season."

Laura Hawthrone (Winter Garden, Fla.) and Clair Shaw (Charlotte, N.C.) will be returners on the attack for the Lady Bobcats. Newcomers Cheryse Cox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and Lexi King (Woodstock, Ga.) will be welcomed additions to the frontline.

Shaw recorded ten goals and two assists in the 2008 campaign.

In goal for the Lady Bobcats will be a newcomer to the women's lacrosse team, Martha Peacock (Mooresville, N.C.) who has made the transition from women's soccer.

"We're very excited that Martha has made the transition from soccer to lacrosse goalie," Chase said. "With her hard work ethic and desire to succeed, Martha is going to make a huge impact for us."

Chase will lead her team for the first time when they travel to Belmont Abbey College February 17th to take on the Lady Crusaders in their season opener and Conference Carolinas opener.
