Limestone Women's Lacrosse Voted No. 1 in Preseason Poll

HIGH POINT, .NC. -- The Limestone College women's lacrosse team tops the 2008 preseason coaches' poll. The Lady Saints are also ranked No. 4 in Lacrosse Magazine's national NCAA Division II preseason poll.

The Lady Saints are eager to return to the field in 2009 after a successful 2008 season. After clinching an NCAA tournament berth and the Conference Carolinas regular and tournament championship titles the squad has a lot to look forward to this spring. Limestone posted a 17-2 overall record last season (10-0 conference).

Limestone has a solid core of veteran players who are set on leading the team through another successful season. The Lady Saints are returning 18 lettering players, including All Americans: Kelly Lickert, Erin Growney, and Melissa Howard. The Lady Saints have eight newcomers who are also eager to contribute.

The Belmont Abbey College women's lacrosse team has been picked to finish second in the preseason coaches poll, and is ranked tenth nationally by Lacrosse Magazine. The Abbey finished the 2008 season with a 12-7 record overall (7-3 conference), finishing second in the league standings. They finished the season winning five of their last six games and earned a spot in the Conference Carolinas Tournament final for the first time in the program's three-year history.
In addition, head coach Shaun Williamson was named National Coach of the Year by www.womenslacrosse.com , and senior defender Theresa Nolan earned first-team All-America honors for the second-straight season. Williamson welcomes back five all-conference performers.

Queens University of Charlotte has been picked to finish in the top three in the pre-season coaches' poll for the third consecutive year. Queens is coming off of a 2008 season with an 11-7 record (6-4 conference). Leading the attack for the Royals will be the returning eight starters, including Kelly Duffey, a 2008 All-Conference selection, Amanda Martin and Carolyn Parsons. "I have high hopes for this season," said second-year head coach Meghan Dennehy. "We are eager to start practicing and get the season underway."

Rounding out the women's lacrosse preseason poll 4-7 was: Pfeiffer University, St. Andrews, Lees-McRae and Erskine respectively.
