CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Lees-McRae women's lacrosse team fell 19-4 to the Belmont Abbey Lady Crusaders Saturday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex in Conference Carolinas action.
With the win, The Abbey improves to 12-4 overall and 8-3 in Conference Carolinas, while the Lady Bobcats slip to 6-7 overall and 2-6 in Conference Carolinas.
Belmont Abbey outshot Lees-McRae 39-9 and won the draw control and ground ball battles by counts of 16-9 and 25-10, respectively, as Laurie Jordan and Tara Chmil led the way with four goals.
The Abbey's Kerri Cut scored the first goal of the game 50 seconds into play to make it 1-0. The Abbey added their second goal two minutes later when Chmil found the back of the net to make it 2-0. Five minutes later, Kristyn Kinsey scored to give the Abbey a 3-0 lead, but Lees-McRae raillied with back-to-back goals from Cheryse Cox and Julia Campbell in just over a minute to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Abbey responded with 10 goals to close out the first half and take a 13-2 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, The Abbey added six more goals, while the Lady Bobcats received two goals off the stick of Cheryse Cox to give the game the fnal score of 19-4.
Cox led the Lady Bobcats with three goals while Julia Campbell had the other. Kari Borton, playing in her second game of her career, had a game high four saves in the first half between the pipes for the Lady Bobcats. She came out of the goal in the second half to grab a team high three groundballs. Julia Campbell and Lexi King chipped in with two ground balls. Abby White and Lauren Martin had a team high three draw controls.
Chmil and Jordan both scored four goals to lead Belmont Abbey. Meghan Darley, Kinsey and Emily Hudgins all scored twice. Brianna Dignan posted three assists, while Chmil and Hooker had two each.
Lees-McRae will host Pfeiffer University in their next game Monday, April 6th at 6:00 p.m.
