Falcons glide past Bobcats

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Pfeiffer University women's lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by an 11-2 margin in the second half en route to a 20-4 victory in Conference Carolinas play on Thursday afternoon at Tate Field.

Pfeiffer (9-5, 4-1 CC) outshot the Bobcats (2-8, 0-4 CC) by a 37-11 margin on the day, while holding a 29-22 advantage in ground balls and converting 22-of-24 clear attempts. Rachel Hebberd paced the Falcons with five goals as Natalie Marvin added four tallies. Sarah Hebberd, Alex Cook, and Liz Melesh each posted a hat trick, as Jessica Moulton tallied a game-high three assists. Kaitlin Booth and Jamie Alcala each played one half in between the pipes, totaling four saves.

Laura Hawthorne (Winter Garden, Fla.) led the Bobcats with two goals, while Katelin Rooney (Naples, Fla.) and Lexi King (Woodstock, Ga.) each added a tally. Emily Guenthner (Nampa, Idaho) and Ellie Psillas (Hagerstown, Md.) each notched an assist, as Taylor Moody (Woodstock, Ga.) made 12 saves in goal for the Bobcats.

Hawthorne opened the scoring 49 seconds into the contest, circling from behind the net and finding the nylon to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead. Marvin and Rachel Hebberd answered right back for the Falcons, each scoring with the next 1:10 to put Pfeiffer up 2-1. The Falcons then pushed the lead to 7-1 when Moulton set up Shannon Bonnel at the 11:52 mark, before Rooney answered with 10:14 to play in the half to trim the margin to 7-2.

After Pfeiffer closed out the half with a pair of late goals to take a 9-2 lead into the intermission, the Falcons broke the game open in the first eight minutes of the second period, scoring six goals in that span. King ended the streak at the 21:15 mark, taking a pass from Guenthner and finding the back of the net for her 10th goal of the season. Pfeiffer then answered with five goals in the next 12 minutes before Hawthorne capped the day's scoring off a pass from Psillas with 33 ticks left on the clock.

Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Converse College in a conference matchup at 12 p.m.
