BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Lees-McRae senior Katelin Rooney recorded a hat trick, but Converse produced a strong second half to defeat LMC, 11-7, in Conference Carolinas play Wednesday afternoon at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Valkyries (4-6, 1-2 CC) earned their first conference win by not allowing a goal the first 17:38 of the second half along with a 4-0 run. The Bobcats (3-5, 0-3) have alternated wins and losses over their last five games.
Converse's Sydney Hickey spotted the visitors a 2-0 lead after a pair of goals in the first 6:02.
The Valkyries methodically stretched the lead to three, 5-2, following two Laura Starkes goals in the next four minutes.
LMC clawed back after Jenah Tracy (Naples, Fla.) and Rooney (Naples, Fla.) bested Converse's Alex Gurecki.
Rooney scored her second goal with five ticks on the clock in the first half.
Converse's defense buckled down while Emma Murphy paced the offense with two goals while the Valkyries stretched the lead to six, 11-5.
Gregg and Rooney recorded a goal at 12:22 and 7:48, respectively, but LMC was unable to complete the comeback.
LMC returns to action March 25 to battle Coker at 4 p.m. at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.
