SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Lees-McRae College women's lacrosse team fell in Conference Carolinas action at Converse on Saturday (Mar. 9) by a score of 15-11.
Game Summary - Converse jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes, before Lees-McRae would tie things up rather quickly. Beth Haynes scored her seventh goal of the season from a free position attempt at 22:50 of the first half, before she would set up Kalbie Grassett for her third of the season on the very next possession 25 seconds later to tie the game at two. Converse would score the next five goals over the next nine minutes, stretching their lead to 7-2 with 13 minutes to play in the first half. Haynes would score her second of the game unassisted at 6:49, before two more Converse goals stretched the Valkyrie lead to 9-3 with a minute to play in the half. Grassett scored her second of the game with 30 seconds left to send the Bobcats to the half down 9-4. Converse scored the first two goals of the second half over an eight-minute span, before Haynes would complete the hat trick with her third of the game on a free position shot at 22:22 of the half. Kat Goldfuss and Patterson Jones would trade goals in the next few minutes to leave Converse up 12-6, before the halfway point of the second half came and went. A Converse goal with 11:09 to play would extend their lead to 13-7, before two goals from Jones both assisted by Haynes over the next few minutes would leave the Bobcats down by five with seven minutes to play. The two teams would trade scores over the final few minutes, with Lees-McRae goals coming from Grassett (2:26), Jones (2:07) and Olivia Gilleland (00:20). Converse would hang on for the victory.
Stats Rundown - Lees-McRae totaled 18 shots in the contest, with 13 of them on goal. Jones led the Bobcats with four goals, while Haynes and Grassett each scored hat tricks and Gilleland also scored once. Haynes moves into a tie for fifth all-time in program history with her 14th career free position goal in the game. Haynes also dished out a game-high three assists on the day, while Jones also registered one helper. The Bobcats also totaled 13 ground balls, led by a game-high six from Haynes. Emily Davidson picked up three, while four other Bobcats each collected one. Lees-McRae also caused nine turnovers in the loss, led by Haynes with five. Four other Bobcats each caused one turnover in the game. With her one caused turnover on the afternoon, Aley Shepard moves into a tie for 10th all-time on the career caused turnover list with 27. Lees-McRae won 14 draw controls in the contest, with Grassett winning a team-high six. Haynes also recorded five, while Jones recorded one. Davidson (0-4) took the loss in goal, making three saves. Samantha Thomson also played 19 minutes in cage, making two saves.
