Lady Bobcats Win Conference Opener
Banner Elk, NC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats soccer teamed earned a come from behind 4-2 win over Erskine College in Conference Carolinas action at Tate Field. After opening the season 0-3, the Lady Bobcats have won back to back to improve to 2-3, (1-0 Conference Carolinas). Erskine falls to 1-2, (0-1 Conference Carolinas).
Erskine's Amanda Tinker put the visitors on the board in the 12th minute, receiving a Casey Cash feed from the corner of the field. Down 1-0, the Lady Bobcats would regroup and begin to dictate the pace on their home field. The Lady Bobcats Gennie Garcia (Fort Worth, TX) would tie the score for the home side, redirecting a free kick from senior classmate Katharine Smith (Banner Elk, NC) in the 29th minute. Just as quickly as the momentum shifted to the Lady Bobcats favor, it was reclaimed by the visiting Fleet as Cash responded with an unassisted tally less than a minute later. The resilient Lady Bobcats would once again pick themselves up, continuing to battle for every ball. In the 44th minute, the hard work would pay off as sophomore Aerial Gregston would find the back of the net, also her first of the year. Junior captain Christine Calvert (Dallas, TX) would find the Atwater, CA native alone in front, who capitalized on her opportunity to send the teams into halftime knotted at two.
The Lady Bobcats would strike in the 68th minute as Calvert (pictured top left) buried her team leading third goal of the season. With the one goal cushion, the Lady Bobcats would tighten up defensively looking for the conference opening win. Calvert would sink the Fleet with her second of the game in the 81st minute, connecting on a nicely served ball from freshman Aleeshia Fisher (Lenoir, NC).
"We were extremely excited to see our girls come out to play with a great work ethic for the entire 90 minutes tonight," commented Head Coach Renee Lopez. "The leadership demonstrated from Gennie, Aerial, and Christine with their finishing tonight was absolutely outstanding. I am extremely proud of all the girls tonight; we played extremely well and earned a win against a solid team."
Si'Ara Washington registered four saves in the Fleet net, while Lady Bobcats freshman keeper Brittany Bolton (Roanoke, VA) earned her first collegiate win picking up three saves.
The Lady Bobcats will resume Conference Carolinas play next Saturday, visiting Anderson University. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm.
