BANNER ELK, NC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats had their two game winning streak snapped Wednesday evening with a 3-0 loss to a strong Southern Wesleyan University Warriors team. The Lady Bobcats fall to 4-9 this season while SWU climbs to 10-3.
For much of the first half, the freshman and sophomore laden Lady Bobcat squad kept pace with the Warriors. As time wore on, the Warriors finally began to wear down the inexperienced Lees-McRae squad. In the 32nd minute, Jackie Tubb pounced on a loose ball that had been banged around the 18 yard box after a Warriors corner kick, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Before the half was over, Stefani Patterson sent a free kick through traffic from the top right of the box that managed to find its way past Lady Bobcats goalkeeper Marissa Middleton (Olathe, KS) in the 44th minute.
In the second half, the Warriors started to tighten up defensively to protect their two goal cushion. In the 70th minute, Patterson would score her second of the game, beating her defender in a foot race and lofting a shot over the outstretched arms of Middleton. With just over ten minutes to play, the Lady Bobcats had finally managed to get past the Warriors back line, registering a handful of shots on goal. Unfortunately, the damage had been done and the Lady Bobcats would run out of time.
The Lady Bobcats outshot the Warriors 15-14 while each team was given a pair of corner kicks. Middleton picked up six saves in goal for the Lady Bobcats while the Warriors' Sierra Threatt and Carissa McNab recorded six and three saves respectively.
The Lady Bobcats host Conference Carolinas foe St. Andrews Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon in their next game action. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm and will be a part of Lees-McRae College's Homecoming weekend.
