BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Senior Abby White (Madisonville, Tenn.) netted her first career match-winner to lead the fourth-seeded Lees-McRae College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over fifth-seeded Mount Olive College in the quarterfinal round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament Monday, pushing the Lady Bobcats through to Thursday's semifinal round.
Lees-McRae (14-5) outshot the Trojans (10-8-1) by a 15-8 margin, including a 7-1 advantage in the second half, as the Lady Bobcats put eight attempts on frame. White and MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) each found the back of the net for the Lady Bobcats, while Sarah Porter (Havelock, N.C.) notched her league-leading 20th goal of the season for Mount Olive.
Sullivan opened the scoring midway through the 17th minute, scoring her 13th goal of the season with a wonderful bending shot off a deflection in the Trojan area to give the Lady Bobcats an early 1-0 lead. White added the winner late in the 43rd minute, putting away the rebound off her own shot for her third goal of the season to send LMC into the interval with a 2-0 lead.
Porter halved the advantage midway through the 67th minute, taking advantage of a loose ball in the LMC area and touching it past the keeper to cut the margin to 2-1. The Trojans would press the attack for the remainder of the match, until the Lady Bobcats took possession and ended the rally attempt with superb clock management.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Thursday in the semifinal round of the conference tournament when the fourth-seeded Lady Bobcats travel to Belmont, N.C. to take on top-seeded Belmont Abbey College. The match is slated to kick off at 2 p.m.
