HIGH POINT, N.C. --- Lees-McRae College freshman Meagan Thornton (Millville, N.J.) has been named the Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the first time in her career after leading the Bobcats to a pair of league wins last week, announced conference officials Tuesday.
Thornton tallied four goals, including her first career hat trick, and one assist last week as the Bobcats (4-2, 3-0 CC) recorded a 4-0 away victory over King College ahead of a decisive 5-0 win against North Greenville University on Saturday. The freshman forward tallied the deciding goal in each match, opening the scoring against King in the 17th minute before assisting on the final goal of the contest.
The Millville, N.J. native then turned in her best performance of the season on Saturday against North Greenville, opening the scoring in the 18th minute with her first of three goals en route to her first career hat trick. Thornton scored again in the 40th and 69th minutes to complete the treble, and tie MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) for the team- and conference-lead with five goals and 11 points. The duo is also tied for 10th in the nation in goals per match, and 27th in points per contest.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Wednesday when the Bobcats host Catawba College in a pivotal NCAA Division II Southeast Region matchup at 7 p.m. on Tate Field.
