St. AUGUSTINE, Fla. --- Freshman Kelsey Twigg notched her first career goal, but the Lees-McRae women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime match to Flagler at Saints Field in St. Augustine, Fla. Friday evening.
The Saints (1-2) earned their first win of the season thanks to late match heroics and solid play by goalie Desiree Shields while the Bobcats (0-2) amassed 14 shots despite falling short.
Both defenses proved stingy in the first 45 minutes while neither team could crack the scoreboard.
LMC's Rachael Nobbs (North Charleston, S.C.) missed a golden opportunity after her header went wide right in the 44th minute.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead when Dempsey Hall retrieved a pass from Abby Austin on the right side of the box and found the net on the far post at the 52:46 mark.
Junior Sarah Mahar (Jacksonville, Fla.) found Twigg (Barrie, Ontario, Canada) 10 minutes later for the equalizer when she dished a pass into the middle of the box.
Overholt and Mahar notched a shot each in overtime that forced a Shields save.
The Saints scored the golden goal off the foot of Evy Jacobs, who found the back of the net from 25 yards out in the 104th minute.
Mahar led both squads with five shots while senior goalie Kaitlyn Briggs (Oviedo, Fla.) had four saves.
LMC returns to action Sunday against Tampa at 1:30 p.m. in St. Augustine, Fla.
