Penalty Kick Dooms Women's Soccer Against Converse, 1-0

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae women's soccer team fell victim to a penalty kick in the 82nd minute while dropping a 1-0 decision to Conference Carolina foe Converse on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.

The Valkyries (11-1, 6-0 CC) remained perfect in conference play while goalie Joscelyn Wallace earned the clean slate with six saves. The Bobcats (4-6-1, 3-2-1) were blanked for the first time since Sept. 14 despite holding the shot advantage, 16-12.

Senior goalie Kaitlyn Briggs (Oviedo, Fla.) impressed with a four-save effort in the opening half while sophomore Lena Langille (Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia) tallied a pair of shots in a 29-second span in the waning minutes of the first half.

Both teams were unable to capitalize on opportunities until an LMC foul inside the box gave Converse a penalty kick.

The Valkyries' Natalie Johnson converted the free play at the 82:17 mark.

The Bobcats saw sophomore Cheyenne Warrick (Pikeville, N.C.) miss the equalizer by mere inches when her shot hit the crossbar with 2:56 remaining.

Teammate Sarah Mahar (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a shot blocked with 55 seconds on the clock.

Coach Nick Whiting's team will step out of conference to battle Catawba Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Salisbury, N.C.
