GAFFNEY, S.C. – Autumn Esposito scored in the 41st minute of the Conference Carolinas semifinals Thursday night against Chowan University and that was all the offense the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team needed as it shut out the Hawks, 1-0. The win not only improves LMC's record to 5-11-3 on the season but it also clinches a spot in the Conference Carolinas Championship game for the Bobcats for the first time since 2011.
Despite being outshot overall in the contest by a margin of 13-8, the Bobcats were a bit more accurate in their attacks than Chowan was. Six of LMC's eight shots were on goal Thursday compared to just three on net for the Hawks. Esposito, Kiara Montenegro and Riley Neese all had two shots on goal each in the victory to account for the six shots.
After earning the conference's defensive player of the year earlier in the day, junior Alexis Feely picked up her fourth shutout of the season and her fifth victory on the campaign after stopping three Chowan shots. Feely now ranks in the top 10 in program history in both wins (16 – 10th) and shutouts (15 – tied for 7th).
The Bobcats will look to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament Saturday night in Gaffney when they take on top-seeded Limestone College in championship game of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. between the Saints and Bobcats.
