Swimming opens 2020 portion of schedule Saturday against Emory & Henry and Bridgewater

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College swimming programs will open the 2020 portion of their schedule on Saturday with a meet against Emory & Henry and Bridgewater. The start time for Saturday's action is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Meadowview, Virginia.

Finalist for the Award of Excellence – The swimming programs were recognized earlier this month by being named a finalist for the 2020 NCAA Division II Award of Excellence. Lees-McRae was chosen because of its Afterschool Swim program where swimming student-athletes from Lees-McRae taught Banner Elk Elementary school kids swimming skills in an after-school program that is free of cost for the elementary school students. About the women's team – The women's team last competed in a tri-meet against Mars Hill and Warren Wilson back on December 7. The Bobcats placed second behind Mars Hill collecting 450.5 points on the day. Lees-McRae was led by the duo of Molly Layde and Kayla Fleming who notched one first-place finish to go along with three second place finishes collectively.

About the men's team – The men's team also competed against Mars Hill and Warren Wilson before the holiday break. Lees-McRae dominated on the men's side winning 11 of the 13 events and seven of the 13 second-place finishes. Overall, five different Bobcats won events on that day. Christian Nishimura and Arsham Mirzaei both won three events, John David McCray won two and the duo of Javier Sanchez and Bailey Lupo each won one event.

Coach's Take – "This is first of three competitions we have leading into the Conference Championships and I am really looking forward to getting back to it," said LMC Head Coach Sean Weddell. "We have had some solid training leading into this semester with the team being back a week prior to classes starting.  It's time to start prepping for Conference Champs a little over a month away which includes competitive, fundamental solid swims from everyone."
