Lady Bobcats Win Conference Opener

Charlotte, NC--With red hot freshman Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem, NC) winning her fifth straight #1 singles match, the Lady Bobcats went on to defeat host school Queens University 7-2 Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas women's tennis action. The Lady Bobcats now stand at 4-3 for the season (1-0 Conference Carolinas) while the Royals slip to 0-7 (0-3).

The Lady Bobcats, following the lead set by Vanard, took all but the #2 singles over the Royals when Andrea Balaszova (Prague, Czech Repuvlic) fell 6-2, 6-3 to the Royals Skye Powell. At #6 Katie Hawkins (Old Fort, NC) outlasted her opponent in a hardfought 6-7(3) 6-3(10-4) match giving the Bobcats the a 5-1 advantage after singles action.

In doubles action Cameron Joyce (Lenoir, NC) and Vanard at #2 allowed their opponents only one game, outscoring them 8-1. Ashley Mayers (Miami, FL) and Hawkins followed suit at #3. The duo of Amanda Nascimento (Vitoria, Brazil) and Balaszova fought the closest battle in doubles before falling 8-6 to the Royals #1 doubles.

The Lady Bobcats tennis team will continue Conference Carolinas action when they take on Limestone College in Gaffney, SC on Monday, March 3rd.
