Banner Elk, NC--The Lees-McRae women's tennis team swept singles and took an 8-1 win over the visiting Barton Bulldogs Saturday afternoon in the last regular season Conference Carolinas match. The Lady Bobcats knot their conference record at 5-5 and their overall record at 10-10. Barton falls to 3-6 and 4-13 overall.
The Lady Bobcats picked up two points in doubles action when the duo of Ashley Mayers (Miami, FL) and Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem, NC) claimed an 8-2 victory over Meaghan Lynch/Chelsea Hsieh in the second flight. At No. 3 Renee Roberson (Salisbury, NC) and Andrea Balszova (Prague, Czech Republic) defeated Summer Chase/Kristen Packer 8-1 while Cameron Joyce (Lenoir, NC) and Amanda Nascimento (Vitoria, Brazil) fell to Jessica Galasso/Nadia Filmater 8-5 in the one slot.
In singles action Vanard continues to impress, winning her fifth consecutive match (and 15 of the last 17 matches) at No. 1 with a 7-6(5), 6-3 over Hsieh. Vanard and doubles partner Mayers have also won three of the last four matches. Balaszova won easily (6-2, 6-0) over Lynch while Mayers outlasted Galasso 6-0, 5-7, (10-6) in a three set match to gain her seventh league win. Nascimento also claimed a three set victory, hers over Chase 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the fourth slot. Joyce took a 6-2, 6-1 match from Packer and Roberson was awarded the win at No. 6 through default.
The Lady Bobcats will now prepare for the Conference Carolinas Tournament which begins April 17. Dates and times will be announced later this week.
