Joyce Seals Upset: Lees-McRae Snaps No. 24 Erksine's Conference Streak with 6-3 Win

BANNER ELK, N.C. - Cameron Joyce delivered the game-winning point as the Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats handed the No. 24 Erksine College Flying Fleet a 6-3 loss for their first Conference Carolinas women's tennis loss in 57 matches Saturday afternoon at the Lees-McRae College Outdoor Tennis Facility.

With the win, Lees-McRae improves to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the conference, while Erskine falls to 11-6 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The Lady Bobcats are currently riding their own five-match win streak.

The Lady Bobcats snapped a streak for the Flying Fleet that dated back to April 17th, 2004 when they last lost a conference match to Pfeiffer University. The Lady Bobcats hadn't defeated the Flying Fleet since today's date in 2004. Lees-McRae handed Pfeiffer two losses in that season.

Gabriela Celi and Christine Vanard notched the first point for Lees-McRae with an 8-3 win at number one doubles. The duo of Jennifer Hawkins and Joyce added the second point with an 8-6 win at three doubles to give the Lady Bobcats a 2-1 lead heading into the singles matches.

Erskine took the first two singles matches at the four and six positions to take a 3-2 lead, but Lees-McRae would go on to win the final four matches to secure the 6-3 win.

Celi clinched her number one singles match with a 6-4, 7-5 win to tie the match at three. The win put Celi on her own five match win streak.

Current Conference Carolinas Player of the Week, Ashley Mayers, won her match at the number three position 6-4, 6-3 to give the Lady Bobcats their fifth point of the match and set the stage for Joyce's heroics.

After dropping the first set 0-6, Joyce rallied to take the second set 6-3 and went on to take a 7-6 (7-4) third set win, sealing the match win for the Lady Bobcats.

Vanard added the exclamation point at number two singles with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win to give Lees-McRae the 6-3 win.

With the win, the Lady Bobcats put themselves in position to earn a share of the conference regular season title with matches against Pfeiffer and Converse remaining.

The Lady Bobcats will look to earn their third straight upset as they host No. 27 Tusculum Sunday at the Lees-McRae College Outdoor Tennis Facility.
