HIGH POINT, N.C. --- Lees-McRae College senior Christine Vanard (Winston-Salem, N.C.) has been named the 2011 Conference Carolinas Women's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year for the first time in her career, announced league officials Thursday.
Vanard enjoyed a tremendous four-year career with the Bobcats, garnering Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year honors and four consecutive all-conference nods. A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Vanard has been named to the all-conference first team on three occasions in her career, earning a spot on the league's second team this season, while also being named to the conference's all-academic team earlier this spring.
The four-time all-conference selection paced the Bobcats from the No. 1 singles position throughout the season, posting four convincing victories in the top singles flight against NCAA Division II opponents. Vanard notched perhaps her most important victory of the campaign on April 13, registering an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory over Converse College's Olivia Self as the Bobcats clinched a spot in the conference tournament. A member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, Vanard earned a spot on Lees-McRae's dean's list this past fall while maintaining a 3.86 cumulative grade point average.
Lees-McRae is expected to return three letter-winners from this year's squad in rising seniors Lyndsay Peagram (Greensboro, N.C.), Kelsey Hiatt (Mt. Airy, N.C.), and Raven Harris (St. Pauls, N.C.). The Bobcats posted a 3-10 record this season, including a 3-6 mark in conference play as Vanard earned her fourth straight all-conference honors.
