NEWBERRY, S.C. --- The Newberry College women's tennis team swept a non-conference matchup with Lees-McRae College on Monday afternoon, surrendering two games in doubles play and seven in singles action.
Newberry's (5-3) duo of Ariel Strong and Susana Aquirre opened the afternoon with an 8-1 win over Lees-McRae's (0-2) Lyndsay Peagram (Greensboro, N.C.) and Samantha Wohlers (Windsor, Ontario, Canada), as Romina Adum and Marina Ziehe defeated Kelsey Hiatt (Mt. Airy, N.C.) and Raven Harris (St. Pauls, N.C.) by a tally of 8-1. Newberry was awarded the third doubles flight by default.
Strong kicked off singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Peagram, as Aquirre registered a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Wohlers in the second flight. Adum swept Hiatt, 6-0, 6-0 in the third flight, as Ziehe defeated Harris, 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth singles matchup. Newberry was then awarded the fifth and sixth flights by default.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Due West, S.C. to open Conference Carolinas play with a 1 p.m. match against Erskine College.
