BELMONT, N.C. --- The Belmont Abbey College women's tennis team swept doubles play and claimed three of the first four matches in singles action en route to a 6-1 win over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas play on Friday afternoon.
Belmont Abbey's (1-7, 1-3 CC) duo of Kirstie Jenkins and Katharine Miller opened doubles play with an 8-4 win over Lees-McRae's (0-5, 0-1 CC) tandem of Samantha Wohlers (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) and Hilary Lutz (Shelby, N.C.), before Brooke Ingram and Bridget Franer defeated Taylor Bost (Jefferson, Ga.) and Stevie Harrell (Morganton, N.C.), 8-2. Paige French and Brigid Donohue pushed the Abbey lead to 3-0 with an 8-2 victory over LeeAnn Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) and Emily Jones (Leonardtown, Md.).
Jenkins kicked off singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Wohlers, before Lutz cut the lead to 4-1 with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Miller in the second flight. Ingram defeated Bost, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to clinch the team victory, while French posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Harrell in the fourth flight.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Saturday when the Bobcats travel to Hartsville, S.C. to take on Coker College in league play at 11 a.m.
