BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Senior Emily Jones (Leonardtown, Md.) posted a victory in both doubles and singles action to pace the Lees-McRae College women's tennis team in her final match with the Bobcats, as Converse College rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play for a 6-3 win in a Conference Carolinas tilt on Friday afternoon.
Lees-McRae's (1-15, 1-10 CC) tandem of Samantha Wohlers (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) and Hilary Lutz (Shelby, N.C.) kicked off the day with an 8-6 victory over Converse's (3-16, 3-8 CC) duo of Olivia Self and Kasey Anderson, before the Valkyries evened the tally with an 8-4 decision for Marisa Esformes and Samantha Sheffield against Taylor Bost (Jefferson, Ga.) and Stevie Harrell (Morganton, N.C.).
Jones and LeeAnn Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) answered for the Bobcats in the third flight, defeating Klaire Rouse and Shae Lyles, 8-5, to give Lees-McRae a 2-1 lead. Self opened singles play with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 victory over Wohlers, while Anderson edged Lutz, 6-4, 6-4 in the second flight.
Esformes posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Bost, before Sheffield rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision over Harrell in the fourth flight. Rouse battled to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sullivan at No. 5 singles, while Jones swept Lyles, 6-0, 6-0 in the sixth flight to cap the day.
Lees-McRae is expected to return five letter-winners from this year's squad, including rising senior Sullivan, and rising junior Wohlers.
