Women's Tennis Puts on Strong Showing at Bluefield College Fall Invitational

BLUEFIELD, Va.  - The Lees-McRae College women's tennis team took on the Bluefield College fall invitational this past weekend (Sept. 7-9), posting several top results.

Sandy Allen and Zeynep Cakrier took the A flight doubles title, beginning with a 6-3 win over Claire Carruthers and Jessica Willard of Shawnee State before nothing a 6-2 win over Marilyn Roustad and Jordyn Karmatz of King (Tenn.). The captured the final win with a 6-3 victory over Gema Mendoza and Mykenzie Roach of Bluefield College. Mackenzie Langmade and Rebecca Pierce also competed in the A doubles flight, dispatching Alicia Bobst and Regan Osborn of Shawnee State 6-0 before falling to Mendoza and Roach 6-1. Jaden Acklin and Dakota Tittle captured the doubles A consolation bracket, knocking off Carruthers and Wilard 6-2 before beating Vanessa Francios and Lauren Smorgonsky of King (Tenn.) 6-3 in the final.

Cakrier won the A singles bracket first beating Isla Bell of King (Tenn.) 6-3, 6-2 before defeating Karmatz 6-0, 6-1. She beat Willard 6-1, 6-0 to reach the final where she and teammate Allen went three sets with Cakrier coming out on top 7-5, 3-6, 10-7. Allen defeated teammate Pierce 6-3, 6-0 before beating teammate Langmade 6-4, 6-3. She came out on top over Mendoza 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 before falling in the final to Cakrier. Two other Bobcats competed in the A singles flight in Nursharneem Shamsuddin and Tittle. Tittle would go on to win the A flight bronze bracket, starting with an 8-2 win over Ruth Jacobyinsky of Shawnee State. Tittle then was declared winner by default in the bracket. Langmade and Acklin played each other in the consolation final. Langmade defeated Roach 8-0, before beating Francios 8-4. She would go on to take the title by beating teammate Acklin 8-1. Acklin began her run in the consolation bracket beating Jacobyanski 8-0 before advancing by default past Morgan Buchanan of King (Tenn.). After 8-1 wins over Karmatz and teammate Pierce, Acklin fell in the final to Langmade.

The team is back in action on Sunday (Sept. 16) when they travel to UVA-Wise. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
