Moorhead paces Bobcats at Power Sox Invitational
HICKORY, N.C. --- Freshman Taryn Moorhead (Deer Park, Wash.) finished first in the pole vault to notch one of six top-five performances for the Lees-McRae College women's track and field team at Lenoir-Rhyne University's Power Sox Invitational on Saturday.
Moorhead posted a vault of 2.98 meters to lead the pole vault competition, while fellow rookie Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.) finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.48 meters. Auburn Lowe (Swain County, N.C.) also finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 4.36 meters. Hannah Henderson (Canvas, W.Va.) placed second in the 3,000-meter steeple chase, posting a time of 12:24.32.
In the 4x100-meter relay, Moorhead, Lowe, Shantra McCoy (Stafford, Va.), and Iesha Poindexter (Jetterville, Va.) turned in a time of 53.11 seconds to finish fourth. Moorhead and McCoy both placed eighth in the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Chelsea Wood (Cumming, Ga.) finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 30.08 meters, while Kayla Frazier (Chesterfield, S.C.) placed sixth with a mark of 25.99 meters.
Jamara Cook (Claremont, N.C.) paced the Bobcats in the hammer throw, finishing sixth with a hurl of 33.92 meters, as Karina Ortiz (Hickory, N.C.) and Crystal Bass (Branford, Fla.) claimed the seventh and eighth spots with throws of 33.00 and 31.96 meters, respectively. Cook also finished eighth in the discus with a toss of 27.74 meters.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Mar. 17 when the Bobcats travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to participate in the Wake Forest Invitational, hosted by Wake Forest University.
