HICKORY, N.C. --- Freshman Chelsea Wood (Cumming, Ga.) eclipsed her own school record by nearly two meters in the javelin throw to lead the Lees-McRae College women's track and field team on Friday at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship, hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Crystal Bass (Branford, Fla.) opened the weekend for the Bobcats with a fourth-place showing in the hammer throw with a mark of 36.79 meters, while Jamara Cook (Claremont, N.C.) finished seventh with a throw of 34.76 meters. Karina Ortiz (Hickory, N.C.) finished ninth with a mark of 34.61 meters, while Genay Miller (Woodstock, Ga.) placed 10th with a throw of 30.61 meters.
Wood placed first in the javelin throw with a school-record mark of 36.73 meters, as fellow rookie Taryn Moorhead (Deer Park, Wash.) finished fifth with a throw of 24.75 meters. Freshman Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.) equaled her own school record in the high jump for the third straight meet, posting a mark of 1.60 meters to finish second and cap the day for the Bobcats.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday when competition concludes at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship, hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University.
