HIGH POINT, N.C. --- Lees-McRae College junior Hannah Henderson (Canvas, W.Va.) has been named the 2011 Conference Carolinas Women's Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year for the first time in her career, announced league officials Thursday.
Henderson put together a solid junior season on the track for the Bobcats, finishing second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at the Conference Carolinas Championships. A native of Canvas, W.Va., Henderson has also named the Women's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year during the fall semester, also earning all-Conference Carolinas Third Team honors following a 14th-place finish at the conference championships.
A member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, Henderson also earned a spot on Lees-McRae's dean's list in the fall of 2010, while maintaining a 3.74 cumulative grade point average as a communication arts major with a minor in Appalachian studies. Henderson posted five top-10 finishes during the outdoor season, including a pair of podium performances in the steeplechase.
Lees-McRae is expected to return 15 letter-winners from this year's squad, including program-record-holders Henderson, Crystal Bass (Branford, Fla.), Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.), Taryn Moorhead (Deer Park, Wash.), Chelsea Wood (Cumming, Ga.), and Jamara Cook (Claremont, N.C.).
