BOONE, N.C. --- Freshman Meagan Thornton (Millville, N.J.) established a new school record in the 400-meter dash to lead the Lees-McRae College women's track and field team to a strong performance at the 2012 Mountaineer Split Indoor Open on Thursday evening.
Thornton finished second in the 400-meter dash with a mark of 59.98 seconds, crossing the line a mere hundredth of a second behind Appalachian State University's Breahna Morrison. The freshman also placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.76 seconds.
Jessica McEnaney (Cary, N.C.) and Rachelle Cleveland (Moyock, N.C.) took seventh and eighth in the 200-meter dash with times of 29.12 and 29.25 seconds, respectively, while Auburn Lowe (Swain County, N.C.) finished 10th with a mark of 29.82.
Sophomore Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.) finished fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.56 meters, while Persephanie Mcrae (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed eighth with a jump of 1.51 meters. Taryn Moorhead (Deer Park, Wash.) took seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 2.74 meters, as Kayla Frazier (Chesterfield, S.C.) and Jamara Cook (Claremont, N.C.) placed sixth and seventh in the shot put with throws of 10.25 and 10.22 meters, respectively. Cook also finished ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 11.51 meters.
Lees-McRae returns to action on January 27 and 28 at the Niswonger Open in Johnson City, Tenn.
