HIGH POINT, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College women's track and field team is tabbed to finish third at the 2012 Conference Carolinas Track and Field Championships after placing third at last year's meet, announced league officials Wednesday.
The Bobcats return a talented core of athletes in all competitions this season, including juniors Jamara Cook (Claremont, N.C.) and Iesha Poindexter (Jetterville, Va.), and sophomores Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.), Taryn Moorhead (Deer Park, Wash.), and Persephanie Mcrae (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Head coach Ley Fletcher also welcomes a strong recruiting class into the fold as the Bobcats look to vault back to the top of the conference.
Defending champion Mount Olive College tops the poll with 42 points and three first-place votes, followed closely by Limestone College with 40 points and two first-place votes. Lees-McRae is close behind in third with 39 points and one first-place vote, while newcomer King College is fourth with 31 points and one first-place vote. Queens University of Charlotte is fifth with 28 points, while Belmont Abbey College (18), North Greenville University (16 and one first-place vote), and Barton College (10) round out the poll.
Curry led the way for the Bobcats at the conference championships last spring, winning the high jump as a freshman and equaling the meet-record of 1.57 meters. Moorhead took the top spot in the pole vault with a mark of 2.89 meters, while Cook placed second and fourth in the discus throw and the shot put.
Lees-McRae kicks off its outdoor season on March 3 when the Bobcats travel to Hickory, N.C. to participate in Lenoir-Rhyne University's Power Sox Invitational.
