HICKORY, N.C. --- Sophomore Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.) and freshman Meagan Thornton (Millville, N.J.) each set a school record on Saturday afternoon to lead the Lees-McRae College women's track and field team to a strong performance at Lenoir-Rhyne University's Power Sox Invitational.
Curry set a program record in the high jump, posting a mark of 1.62 meters en route to a second-place finish. Thornton put together a strong collegiate outdoor debut, winning the 400-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 1:05.74, while placing third in the 100-meter hurdles with a mark of 15.83 seconds. She then teamed with Iesha Poindexter (Jetterville, Va.), Jessica McEnaney (Cary, N.C.), and Auburn Lowe (Swain County, N.C.) to finish third in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 51.13 seconds.
Rachelle Cleveland (Moyock, N.C.) placed second in the javelin with a throw of 35.79 meters, as Taryn Moorhead (Deer Park, Wash.) finished second in the pole vault with a jump of 2.75 meters. Jamara Cook (Claremont, N.C.) finished fourth in the discus (31.55 meters) and fifth in the hammer throw (33.06 meters), as Genay Miller (Woodstock, Ga.) placed seventh in the hammer throw with a mark of 32.05 meters.
Kayla Frazier (Chesterfield, S.C.) placed fifth in the shot put and eighth in the discus with marks of 9.89 and 28.50 meters, respectively, as Cleveland finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 9.78 meters. Persephanie Mcrae (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed seventh in the high jump with a mark of 1.47 meters, as Hannah Henderson (Canvas, W.Va.) finished third in the one-mile run with a time of 5:33.87.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Friday, March 16 when the Bobcats travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take part in the first of two days at the Wake Forest Open.
