Bobcats lead pack at Conference Carolinas Championships

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College women's track and field team holds a narrow lead after day one of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Championships, winning the pole vault and taking two of the top three spots in the high jump on Friday at the Arthur, Laurentsen and Sanders Track and Field Complex.

Lees-McRae tops the day one standings with 33 points, followed closely by Mount Olive College and Limestone College in a two-way tie for second with 32 markers. King College is fourth with 29 points, followed by North Greenville University (16) and Belmont Abbey College (10).

Taylor Pritchett (Apex, N.C.) took home the women's pole vault title with a personal-best mark of 2.59 meters, as Persephanie Mcrae (Brooklyn, N.C.) placed second in the high jump with a career-best jump of 1.62 meters. Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.) placed third in the high jump for the Bobcats with a mark of 1.62 meters.

Rachelle Cleveland (Moyock, N.C.) finished second in the javelin throw with a mark of 32.09 meters, as Kayla Frazier (Chesterfield, S.C.) placed sixth with a throw of 26.51 meters. Genay Miller (Woodstock, Ga.) and Jamara Cook (Claremont, N.C.) placed seventh and eighth in the hammer throw with marks of 33.29 and 32.93 meters, respectively.

In the preliminary heats for Saturday's running finals, Iesha Poindexter (Jetterville, Va.) qualified in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, as Hannah Henderson (Canvas, W.Va.) and Crystal Fischer (Greer, S.C.) each booked a spot in the finals for the 1,500-meter run. Freshman Meagan Thornton (Millville, N.J.) qualified in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, winning her heat in the 400-meter hurdles while posting a personal-best time of 15.57 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.

Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday on the final day of the Conference Carolinas Championships at the Arthur, Laurentsen and Sanders Track and Field Complex. Competition is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
