Bobcats shine at Appalachian Open
BOONE, N.C. --- Junior Kortnie Curry (Lexington, N.C.) placed second in both the high jump and the long jump to pace the Lees-McRae College women's track and field team to a strong performance at the Appalachian State University Open on Friday afternoon.
Curry placed second in the long jump to start the day, posting a mark of 4.55 meters, as Auburn Lowe (Swain County, N.C.) finished fourth with a leap of 4.01 meters.
Rachelle Cleveland (Moyock, N.C.) paced the Bobcats in the shot put, placing fourth with a mark of 11.04 meters, as Jamara Cook (Claremont, N.C.) and Kayla Frazier (Chesterfield, S.C.) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with throws of 10.50 and 10.30 meters. Genay Miller (Woodstock, Ga.) placed 12th with a mark of 8.89 meters.
Frazier placed sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 32.03 meters, as Cleveland and Miller finished seventh and 10th, respectively, with marks of 31.02 and 27.54 meters. Curry turned in a strong performance in the high jump, finishing second with a mark of 1.61 meters, while Persephanie McRae (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed third with a jump of 1.56 meters.
Sarah Monday (Lexington, N.C.) and Taryn Moorhead (Deer Park, Wash.) each posted a mark of 2.57 meters in the pole vault, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively, by virtue of a judge's decision. Miller and Frazier placed 11th and 12th, respectively, in the hammer throw with marks of 32.10 and 30.35 meters.
Lowe and Monday teamed with Jessica McEnaney (Cary, N.C.) and Iesha Poindexter (Jetterville, Va.) to finish second in the 4x100-meter relay, posting a time of 51.38 seconds, while Miesha Thompson (Orlando, Fla.) placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. Poindexter and McEnaney placed third and eighth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash with marks of 12.59 and 13.37, as Monday, Lowe, and Thompson claimed the 11 thru 13 spots.
Mallory Overholt (Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada) finished 12th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:50.61, while Poindexter placed third in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 26.91 seconds. Monday and McEnaney placed ninth and 10th, respectively, as McEnaney, Lowe, Overholt and Monday finished fifth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:34.11.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Friday, April 19 when the Bobcats host the first day of the 2013 Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Arthur, Lauritsen and Sanders Track and Field Complex. The meet is slated to begin at 3 p.m. with the high jump and javelin competitions.
