BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Three Lady Bobcats hit over .500, and Megan Epperson (St. John, Ind.) posted her second straight double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs to lead the Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team to a three-set sweep of Converse College in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon in Williams Gymnasium.
Lees-McRae (8-6, 6-0 CC) won the match by scores of 25-15, 25-7, and 25-16 to record its fifth straight win, while running its conference record to a perfect and league-leading 6-0. The Lady Bobcats posted a solid .333 hitting percentage in the match, while holding the Valkyries to a -.050 clip on the attack.
Taylor Clendenin (Statesville, N.C.) tallied seven kills and nine digs, while Epperson posted her eighth double-double of the season to pace the Lady Bobcats. Clendenin and Whitney Justice (Connelly Springs, N.C.) each recorded seven kills while posting hitting percentages of .538 and .583, respectively. Megan Mitchell (Minden, Nev.) chipped in 32 assists and four services, while Meme Brown (Boonville, N.C.) posted a sterling .500 hitting percentage with three kills on four attempts.
Val Thoms (Menasha, Wis.) paced the Valkryies with eight kills and 12 digs, while Kandace Griffin (Birmingham, Ala.) posted 11 assists.
Lees-McRae started off strong, opening an early 7-3 lead in the first set before launching a 10-7 run to stretch the lead to 17-10 on a pair of Converse errors. The Valkyries responded with a 3-0 spurt to trim the margin to 17-13 before Lees-McRae rebounded to close out the 25-15 first-set win with an 8-2 run.
The Lady Bobcats continued to press the attack in the second set, cruising to a 25-7 second-frame victory after opening an early 11-1 lead in the stanza. After Converse tallied a pair of points to trim the margin to 11-3, the Lady Bobcats went on a 7-1 surge to push the advantage to 18-4. Lees-McRae then closed out the set with a 7-3 spurt to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Lees-McRae surged to a quick 8-4 lead in the third set after a Clendenin kill, and after an ensuing Lady Bobcat error, ran the score to 12-5 on the heels of a 6-0 run that was capped by an emphatic block from Justice. Converse battled back to cut the lead to 15-10, but the Lady Bobcats would not be denied, closing out the three-set sweep on a service ace from Clendenin that capped a 10-6 match-ending run.
The Lady Bobcats return to the court on Wednesday when they travel to Belmont, N.C. for a 7 p.m. matchup with Belmont Abbey to continue conference play.
