WINGATE, N.C. --- The No. 21 Wingate University women's volleyball team posted a hitting percentage of .209 and six blocks en route to a straight-set victory over Lees-McRae College to open the 2012 season on Friday evening in Cuddy Arena at the Wingate Classic.
Wingate (1-0) won the match by scores of 25-13, 26-24, and 25-17, holding Lees-McRae (0-1) to a -.021 hitting percentage. Taylor Clendenin (Statesville, N.C.) and Jordan Banta (Virginia Beach, Va.) each tallied seven kills, while Dana Oliver (Davie, Fla.) added four smashes and 12 digs.
Sariah Suryadevara (Cincinnati, Ohio) added a match-high 14 digs, while Banta posted a contest-best four block assists. Taylor Pritchett (Apex, N.C.) chipped in 13 assists, as Clendenin recorded a match-high three service aces.
Susie Murach paced the Bulldogs with eight kills, while Lexi Potter added seven smashes. Iris Brewer and Alison Cooke recorded 15 and 11 assists, respectively, as Grace Krauser and Shelly Stumpff each posted five kills. Cooke and Cory McGowen added nine digs each, while Potter and Anna Hilton both chipped in three block assists.
Wingate jumped out to an early lead in the first set, opening the match with a 17-9 run that was capped by a Krauser service ace. Following an Oliver kill, the Bulldogs countered with an 8-3 spurt to close out the 25-13 first-set win on a smash by Murach.
The Bobcats battled back in the second set, rallying from an 11-6 deficit to take a 15-14 advantage on the heels of a 9-3 run. Wingate would answer with an 8-5 spurt, claiming a 22-20 lead before the Bobcats responded with a 4-0 run of their own, regaining the advantage at 24-22 on a service ace by Suryadevara. The Bulldogs countered with a 4-0 spurt, fighting off a set point and claiming the set by a score of 26-24 following a Bobcat miscue.
Wingate carried the momentum into the third set, opening the frame with a 9-0 run before pushing the advantage to 15-4 on a kill by Hilton. The Bobcats would counter once again with an 11-5 run, closing the gap to 20-15 following a Clendenin service ace. Wingate answered with a 5-2 spurt, capping the set and the match on a kill by Hilton to take the frame, 25-17.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday when the Bobcats wrap up their weekend at the Wingate Classic, taking on UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m. and Winston-Salem State University at 3:30 p.m. in Wingate, N.C.
