Limestone rallies past Bobcats, 3-1

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Limestone College women's volleyball team rallied for a 3-1 win over Lees-McRae College on Wednesday night in Conference Carolinas play in Williams Gymnasium, taking the final three sets and holding the Bobcats to a .147 hitting percentage in that span.

Limestone (5-17, 5-7 CC) won the match by scores of 13-25, 25-20, 25-14, and 25-23, posting a .172 hitting percentage while limiting Lees-McRae (9-11, 6-6 CC) to two service aces on the night. The Bobcats recorded a .226 overall attacking percentage in the match, including a .483 clip in the opening set, while tallying 52 digs and 50 kills on the night.

Rachel Grether (Ocala, Fla.) paced the Bobcats with 12 kills, including eight in the first set, as Dana Oliver (Miami, Fla.) and Haydn Beatty (Norman, Okla.) added 10 and nine smashes, respectively. Oliver and Molly Corhn (Hendersonville, N.C.) each turned in a double-double in the match, as Oliver added 14 digs to her 10 kills and Corhn posted 38 assists and 10 digs.

Sariah Suryadevara (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped in a match-high 17 digs, while Jordan Banta (Virginia Beach, Va.) recorded eight kills. Lauren Fox (Garland, Texas) added seven kills and a .538 hitting percentage on the night.

Emylee Gotsch led the way for Limestone with a match-high 13 kills, adding a .281 hitting percentage as Erin Courtenay and Regan Youngs tallied 10 and nine smashes, respectively. Jessica Onken chipped in a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs, while Rebecca Kerrison recorded 11 digs.

Lees-McRae got off to a strong start in the first set, opening the frame with a 15-3 run that was capped by three straight kills from Grether. After Limestone trimmed the margin to 19-9 with a 6-4 spurt, the Bobcats answered with an identical 6-4 run of their own to close out the frame with a Beatty smash to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Limestone would rally in the second, rallying from an early 8-6 hole with a 9-6 spurt to claim a narrow 15-14 advantage on a Courtenay kill. The Bobcats countered with a 3-1 spurt, taking a 17-16 lead following an Oliver smash before Limestone responded, answering with a 9-3 surge to cap the set and even the match at 1-1.

The Saints carried the momentum into the third set, opening the frame with a 14-6 run before pushing the margin to 22-11 following a Kristin Hudgins ace. Limestone would hold on to win the set, closing out the frame on an Onken kill after the Bobcats fought off a pair of set points with an Angela Morse (Clinton Township, Mich.) smash and a Beatty ace.

Limestone rallied from an early 5-3 deficit in the fourth, countering with an 8-2 run to take an 11-7 lead following a Bobcat miscue. The Saints would push the advantage to 16-11 before the Bobcats responded, answering with an 8-3 surge to even the tally at 19-19 after an Oliver smash.

After Limestone claimed a 22-20 lead and the Bobcats countered with kills by Fox and Grether to even the tally at 22-22, the Saints answered with three of the set's final four points to claim the frame and the match on a block by Youngs and Courtenay.

Lees-McRae returns to the court on Friday when the Bobcats host day one of the Lees-McRae Fall Tournament in Williams Gymnasium. The Bobcats will take on St. Augustine's University at 1 p.m. and Lander University at 7 p.m.
