Bears sweep Bobcats, 3-0

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's volleyball team posted a .300 hitting percentage and 51 digs en route to a straight-set sweep of Lees-McRae College on Saturday afternoon in Williams Gymnasium.

Lenoir-Rhyne (14-6) won the match by scores of 25-13, 25-23, and 25-21, limiting Lees-McRae (10-13) to a .096 clip on the attack while tallying 43 kills and four blocks.

Taylor Clendenin (Statesville, N.C.) and Jordan Banta (Virginia Beach, Va.) paced the Bobcats with nine kills each, as Megan Mitchell (Minden, Nev.) added 16 assists and three service aces. Sariah Suryadevara (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped in a match-high 13 digs, while Molly Corhn (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Clendenin dug out seven and six attacks, respectively.

Haley Rhyne led the way for Lenoir-Rhyne with a match-high 17 kills, posting a .429 hitting percentage while nearly turning in a double-double with nine digs. Kiaya Robinson added eight kills, as Anna Johnson recorded a match-high 13 digs and Meredith Lutz chipped in a contest-best 38 assists.

Lenoir-Rhyne got off to a strong start in the first set, opening the match on a 12-4 run before pushing the margin to 21-11 on a kill by Ashley Wells. The Bears then capped the set on a Wells smash to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Bobcats battled back in the second, rallying from an early deficit to take a 16-13 lead following a Mitchell ace. Lenoir-Rhyne would cut into the advantage over the next several minutes, evening the tally at 22-22 before closing out the set with a 3-0 run that included a kill by Morgan Bunker.

Lees-McRae answered early in the third, taking a 10-6 lead on a Bear miscue before Lenoir-Ryhne responded with a 6-0 run to claim a 12-10 advantage following a Rhyne kill. The Bobcats would battle back to even the tally at 14-14 before Lenoir-Rhyne regained control, taking a 22-18 lead following a kill by Kayla Morrow.

After Lenoir-Rhyne pushed the Bobcats to match point at 24-20 and Banta responded with an emphatic smash, Rhyne countered with a kill of her own to cap the set and the match at 25-21.

Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday when the Bobcats travel to Wingate, N.C. to take on Wingate University in a Southeast Region battle at 7 p.m.
