Bobcats drop pair at King Invitational

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of hard-fought matches to Trevecca Nazarene University and Carson-Newman College on Saturday afternoon at the King University Invitational, falling to each team in straight sets.

Trevecca Nazarene (4-3) defeated Lees-McRae (1-7) by scores of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-16 in the first match of the day, as Carson-Newman (5-3) claimed the nightcap against the Bobcats, 25-11, 25-22, and 25-20. The Bobcats combined for 55 digs, 52 kills, and 12 blocks on the day, while dropping in 10 service aces.

Avalon Lisicio (Naples, Fla.) averaged more than four kills per set on the day, posting 13 smashes in each match, as Jordan Banta (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Angela Morse (Clinton Township, Mich.) added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Banta paced the Bobcats with six blocks (two solo, four assists), while Haydn Beatty (Norman, Okla.) posted a team-high 11 digs.

Match One: Trevecca Nazarene 3, Lees-McRae 0 (Box Score)

Trevecca Nazarene jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first set before the Bobcats responded, cutting the margin to 9-8 on a Banta smash. The Trojans quickly answered with a 13-5 surge, pushing the advantage to 22-13 before claiming the set, 25-15, on a Bobcat miscue.

Lees-McRae countered with a 5-2 spurt to start the second set, capping the run with a Liscio smash. The Trojans responded with a 14-5 surge to claim a 16-10 advantage on a Bobcat miscue. Trevecca Nazarene kept up the pace over the next several minutes, pushing the margin to 20-13 following a Persephonie Devereaux kill before closing out the set with a 6-0 run.

The Trojans carried the momentum into the third, opening the frame with an 11-2 run before stretching the margin 20-11 on a Kirsten Taylor smash. Trevecca Nazerene would close out the set and the match from there, capping the frame with a 5-2 spurt that included a solo block by Taylor.

Match Two: Carson-Newman 3, Lees-McRae 0 (Box Score)

The Eagles got off to a strong start in the first set, opening the match with a 9-0 run before pushing the advantage to 17-4 on a kill from Emily Schultz. The Bobcats would battle back, fighting off three set points to cut the margin to 24-11 on a Morse ace before Carson-Newman claimed the set, 25-11.

Lees-McRae answered in the second frame, fighting back from an early 5-2 deficit to take a 13-11 lead following a Banta smash. The Eagles countered with an 8-4 run, claiming a narrow 19-17advantage before pushing the margin to 23-18 following a Bobcat miscue. The Bobcats refused to give in, responding with a 4-1 spurt to close the gap to 24-22 on a Banta ace before Carson-Newman took the frame on a Bobcat miscue.

The teams battled to an early 9-9 tie in the third set before the Eagles took control, launching an 8-5 run to claim a 17-14 advantage following a kill from Kianna Sedlacek. The Bobcats would answer with a 4-0 spurt, taking a 20-19 lead with back-to-back smashes from Morse before Carson-Newman countered with a 6-0 spurt of its own, claiming the set and the match after an ace from Sedlacek.

Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday when the Bobcats travel to Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University in non-conference play at 7 p.m.
