GAFFNEY, S.C. --- Haylee Leonard (Wallburg, N.C.) and Angela Morse (Greenville, S.C.) combined for 15 kills, and Haydn Beatty (Norman, Okla.) added a match-high five assists as the Limestone College women's volleyball team rallied for a hard-fought four-set victory over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon.
Limestone (10-14, 8-7 CC) won the match by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-12, and 25-19, attacking at a .281 clip while holding Lees-McRae (2-26, 0-15 CC) to 37 kills and six aces. The Saints tallied 47 kills, 40 assists, and nine blocks in the contest.
Avalon Liscio (Naples, Fla.) paced the Bobcats with 12 kills, adding a team-high 10 digs to post a double-double, as Morse posted seven smashes and a .385 hitting percentage. Leonard and Beatty chipped in eight and seven kills, respectively, while Beatty tallied eight digs. Molly Corhn (Hendersonville, N.C.) recorded eight digs, two aces, and a match-high 30 assists for the Bobcats.
Regan Youngs led the way for Limestone with match-bests of 17 kills and a .469 hitting percentage to go along with five digs, as Judy Slow added 16 smashes. Jessica Onken chipped in 29 assists, while Rebecca Kerrison and Haley Thomas posted match-highs of 14 digs and three aces, respectively.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 6-5 lead in the first set before the Saints responded, snatching an 11-6 advantage following a Slow kill to cap a 6-0 spurt. Lees-McRae would answer with an 11-7 run, cutting the margin to 18-17 on a Morse ace.
After Limestone opened a 21-18 lead following a kill by Slow, the Bobcats countered with a 7-1 surge, claiming the set and a 1-0 advantage in the match on a smash from Liscio.
The Saints responded in the second, taking a 10-4 lead before the Bobcats fought back with an 11-7 spurt, closing the gap to 17-15 following a block by Beatty. The teams would trade runs over the next several minutes, with Limestone claiming a 22-16 advantage on a kill from Erin Courtenay. Lees-McRae answered with a 4-0 run, trimming the margin to 22-20 before the Saints closed out the set with three straight points to even the match at 1-1.
Limestone carried the momentum into the third set, opening an early 13-6 advantage before pushing the margin to 18-7 on a tandem block by Onken and Nikki Eno. The Saints would close out the frame from there, claiming a 2-1 lead in the match following a smash by Youngs.
The Bobcats battled back in the fourth, cutting the advantage to 11-9 with a 3-1 spurt that was capped by a kill from Leonard. Limestone countered with a 9-2 run, pushing the lead to 20-11 on back-to-back aces by Thomas. The Bobcats refused to give in, responding with an 8-4 spurt and fighting off a trio of match points before Eno capped the set with a solo block.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Wednesday when the Bobcats host Limestone in league play at 7 p.m.
