BELMONT, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Belmont Abbey College Saturday afternoon (25-21, 25-12, 22-25, 26-24) in a Conference Carolinas contest. Senior Courtney Weathersbee led the Bobcats with her fifth double-double of the season with 32 assists and 10 digs Saturday.
Set 1: Freshman Caitlyn Smirne totaled five of her seven kills in the match in the opening set. Despite that effort from Smirne and the rest of the Bobcats, the Crusaders edged Lees-McRae in the first set, 25-22.
Set 2: In the second set, the Bobcats struggled offensively as they committed 10 errors on 23 attempts with just six kills for a hitting percentage of -.174. With the Bobcats struggling offensively, Belmont Abbey took advantage by winning the second set, 25-12.
Set 3: Facing the potential of losing the match, the Bobcats turned up the intensity on defense. As a team, Lees-McRae totaled three total blocks in the frame which proved to be the difference as the final score turned out to be 25-22 Bobcats.
Set 4: After the Bobcats used defense to pick up their first set victory in the third, both the Crusaders and Bobcats were firing on all cylinders offensively. LMC outhit Belmont Abbey .367 to .324 in the fourth, however, the Crusaders ended up winning the fourth set ending the match with a 26-24 victory.
Stat Standouts: In addition to the performance by Weathersbee, the duo of Lexi Zangari and Whitley Starnes also had stellar matches with hitting percentages of .462 and .500, respectively. Zangari also led the way for the Bobcats with three total blocks, and Madison Martin led all LMC players with 16 digs.
Next Up: The Bobcats return to action Tuesday when they travel to Bluefield State for a non-conference contest. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
