BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory (25-19, 25-15, 18-25, 25-22) over Erskine College Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium. The win not only marks the first Conference Carolinas victory for the Bobcats this season but it was also the first win for the Bobcats over Erskine since 2014.
Set 1: Early in the first set, the Bobcats and Flying Fleet exchanged points frequently as the score was knotted at 14-14 at one point. Following that point, however, the Bobcats were able to separate from Erskine using some stellar work from the service line along with its normal offense to open a nine point lead on the Flying Fleet (23-14) before closing out the set, 25-19. Johnaliz Cotte paced LMC from the service line with three aces in the first set alone.
Set 2: Fresh off its victory in the first set, Lees-McRae continued to put pressure on the Flying Fleet in the second. The Bobcats hit a match-high .296 on 27 attempts in the second to convincingly knock off Erskine for the second straight frame, 25-15. Kaci Thornton led all Bobcat attackers with five kills in the second stanza.
Set 3: In the third frame, the Bobcats struggled to get their offense clicking as only two of their six players who logged an attack in the stanza had positive hitting percentages in Cotte and Caitlyn Smirne. The Flying Fleet took full advantage of the sluggish offense by Lees-McRae to pick up a 25-18 win to keep the match going.
Set 4: The Bobcats regained the offensive productivity they had in the second set in the fourth. Lexi Zangari led the way totaling four of her 11 kills in what proved to be the final set of Saturday's match as LMC finished off the match with a 25-22 victory.
Stat Standouts: Thornton paced LMC with 14 kills and 10 digs in Saturday's win over the Flying Fleet. Courtney Weathersbee also notched a double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs as well. Senior Madison Martin chipped in 16 digs and Lauren Arnold led all Bobcats with four block assists.
Next Up: After winning two of their three matches this past week, the Bobcats will look to maintain this momentum next weekend when they head out on the road for a pair of matches at Mount Olive Friday and Barton Saturday. Friday's contest will begin at 7 p.m., and Saturday's is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first serve.
