FLORENCE, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team fell twice Saturday on day two of the Coker/FMU Invitational. LMC dropped its first match of the day to Winston-Salem State by a score of 3-2 (25-19, 23-25,16-25,25-15,15-11) followed by a 3-0 loss (25-20,25-14,25-15) to Francis Marion.
Winston-Salem State Recap – It looked like the Bobcats might pick up their first victory of the 2018 season after winning two of the first three sets of Saturday's opening match. However, miscues hurt the Bobcats as they committed a total of 47 errors combined across attack, service, receiving and blocking errors to help the Rams rally and win the match in five frames.
Despite the loss, LMC put together one of its better offensive performance of the young season against the Rams. Overall, four Bobcats tallied eight or more kills. Logan Slusher paced the Bobcat attack totaling 14 kills on 31 attacks. Caitlyn Smirne chipped in nine kills, while Hanna Steckler and Kaci Thornton both added eight kills each. Freshman Erica Slinde picked up a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs. Additionally, Allie Cunningham paced the Bobcat defense with 15 digs.
Francis Marion Recap – Lees-McRae's offense cooled off considerably in its second match of the day as it hit .077 against Francis Marion. FMU's offense was clicking, however, hitting .318 in 88 attacks on its way to a three-set victory over the Bobcats.
Smirne paced the Bobcats with eight kills and 11 digs in the matchup against the Patriots. Slinde once again led the squad in assists with 15. Lexi Zangari also had stellar showing hitting .625 on eight attacks with five kills. Zangari also had a solo block and a pair of block assists in the contest.
Next Up – Lees-McRae will return to action next weekend in Pembroke, N.C. for three matches. LMC will take on Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday before taking on Shaw and Coker on Saturday to close out the weekend.
