BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team fell in three sets to King University (25-9, 25-22, 25-22) Tuesday night in Conference Carolinas action at Williams Gymnasium. The loss pushes Lees-McRae's record to 7-20 overall and 3-9 in league play.
Set 1 – The Tornado offense definitely came out swinging to begin Tuesday's match. King hit .423 with 26 attacks and 13 kills on their way to a convincing 25-9 victory in the first set. The Bobcat offense, meanwhile, struggled to find its groove as the team hit -.172 on 29 attacks in the opening stanza.
Set 2 – Lees-McRae came out in the second set and fared much better than in the first. LMC led the Tornado 18-17 in the second thanks to a 4-0 run. This run by the Bobcats forced the Tornado to burn a timeout to regroup. The timeout did the trick as King reeled off a 6-0 run to not only tie the score but pull in front for good on its way to a 25-22 victory.
Set 3 – Much like in the second set, the Bobcats and Tornado played a very even set in the third. King and Lees-McRae were knotted at 21 late in the frame. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the Tornado went on a run again this time a 4-1 spurt to close out Lees-McRae, 25-22.
Stat Standouts – A pair of Bobcats picked up double-doubles Tuesday. Caitlyn Smirne totaled 10 kills and 10 digs against the Tornado, while Megan Gallion led the team in both assists (22) and digs (13) in the contest.
Next Up – The Bobcats will be back in action Friday when they travel to Barton for another league contest. First serve between the Bulldogs and Bobcats is set for 7 p.m.
