SPARTANBURG, SC--Some habits are hard to break, and while it took Lees-McRae's women's cross country team three years to win another conference championship, the wait for their 7th title in 10 years was just as sweet. With all nine women finishing in the top 28, the Bobcats captured the first ever Conference Carolinas (formerly Carolinas Virginia Athletic Conference) title with a score of 51 points to runner-up Anderson University's 78 this past Saturday in Spartanburg, SC.
The Bobcats had five women make All-Conference led by sophomore
Dana Lindholm (Weaverville, NC). She finished 4th in a time of
19:37. Sophomore Carla Swart (Buford, GA) finished 7th in a season
best time of 19:50.
Freshman April Harris (Jonesville, VA) finished in 11th place with a time of 20:02 leading a pack of Bobcats with Ashley May (Chilhowie, VA) in 14th place at 20:20; Demarea Colson (Chesapeake, VA) ran the race of her career with a time of 20:25 and Gina Valenti (Washington, NC) finished in 16th place with a time of 20:26.
Sophomore Jenny Hurd (Danbury, NC) placed 21st with a time of 20:51, followed by freshman Anna Gray (Hernando, FL) in 22nd with a time 20:56. Sophomore Karyn Bragman (Clayton, NC) ran a personal best time as well with a mark of 21:28 for 28th place.
"This group is special and have worked so hard for this moment. They deserve every honor they get," said Head Coach Craig McPhail who was named Women's Coach of the Year for the 10th time in his career (7 women; 3 men). "These young women are very goal oriented and run so well together, pushing each other in practice and races."
Next up for the Bobcats will be the NCAA DII Southeast Regional Championships held at Wingate University in Wingate, NC, on Saturday, November 3rd.
