JOPLIN, MO--Lees-McRae's women's cross country team participated in the 2007 NCAA DII National Championships hosted by Missouri Southern State University this past Saturday. The Bobcats finished 23rd in the race featuring 24 teams and 188 runners.
"I thought the experience was a good one for the women, they all ran faster than before," said Coach Craig McPhail. "We are a young bunch with a lot of talent, we'll use this to help us in the future."
The Bobcats qualified for the meet with their outstanding performance in the NCAA DII Southeast Regional. Their victory at Regionals got them the automatic bid for the national championships.
McPhail also earned Regional Coach of the Year for the women and was honored at the championships.
Leading the way for the Bobcats was sophomore Dana Lindholm (Weaverville, NC). In her second national championship appearance Lindholm ran a time of 23:07 over the 6k course and finished in 109th position.
Carla Swart (Buford, GA) finished in a time of 24:38 in 168th position, with April Harris (Jonesville, VA) 24:43 and Gina Valenti (Washington, NC) 24:48 close behind. Ashley May (Chilhowie, VA) ran a time of 25:03.
Juniors Demarea Colson (Chesapeake, VA) ran a time of 25:28 and Jenny Hurd (Danbury, NC) ran a time of 25:49.
This marks just the third time the Bobcats have advanced to the National Championships as a team and this ties their highest place. They advanced in 2001 and 2003, with individual qualifiers in 2000 and 2006.
